Political history

A part of the community since September 2022, he briefly joined the Conservative Party before joining the Labour Party. He joined as Member of Parliament for Merseyside in the 70th Parliament within the Labour backbenches. By the end, he was appointed Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

In the first half 71st Parliament, he was Deputy Leader of the Labour Party before defecting to the Conservative benches due to the "unstable and unrecoverable situation" of the Labour Party. He also was appointed as Deputy Chief Whip and Parliament Secretary to the Northern Ireland Office.

After the 72nd Parliament was dissolved, he was the proposed Northern Ireland Secretary for the Conservative Party and after the May 2023 General Election, he was formally appointed as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on the 13th of May 2023.
