martinbani22 is a British-Albanian politician who is currently serving as Minister without Portfolio since 3 June 2023 and served as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 13 May until 3 June 2023. In addition, he is currently the Member of Parliament for Hertfordshire since the May 2023 general election. He has also served as the Member of Parliament for Surrey in the 72nd Parliament, and for Merseyside in the 70th and 71st Parliaments of the United Kingdom.
Political career
Labour Party
Joining the community in September 2022, martinbani22 briefly was a member of the Conservative Party before joining the Labour Party. He joined as Member of Parliament for Merseyside in the 70th Parliament within the Labour backbenches. He served the majority of the 70th Parliament in the backbenches, before being appointed Shadow Foreign Secretary and as a member of Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC). By the end, he was appointed Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
Conservative and Unionist Party
On January 28, he resigned as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and defected to the benches of the Conservative and Unionist Party. He became a Member of Parliament for Surrey and then Hertfordshire in the 72nd Parliament. He also served in other minor positions such as a Labour member in the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC), as a Conservative member in the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs and soon as its Chair. He also served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office and Northern Ireland Office.
Backbencher and Parliament
In the first half 71st Parliament, Martinbani22 was Deputy Leader of the Labour Party before defecting to the Conservative benches due to the "unstable and unrecoverable situation" of the Labour Party. He served as Conservative MP for Surrey and Parliamentary Secretary to the Cabinet Office during the remainder of the 71st Parliament. In the 72nd Parliament, he was MP for Hertfordshire. He also was appointed as Deputy Chief Whip and Parliament Secretary to the Northern Ireland Office.
Cabinet
After the 72nd Parliament was dissolved, Martinbani22 was the proposed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland for the Conservative Party and after the May 2023 General Election, he was formally appointed as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on the 13th of May 2023. He resigned as Northern Ireland Secretary on 3 June and was appointed as Minister without Portfolio by the Prime Minister on the same day.
