The New Statesman (legally known as 'New Statesman Limited') is a British political and cultural newsmagazine. It was founded on 9 April 2022 by AlanHalvorsen.
The magazine was among the first "tabloids" registered in the United Kingdom, along with the likes of the Scotsman and the Observer, following a shakeup of UK discord media channels. It publishes regular articles analysing recent events in politics and current affairs. Some of its most popular releases include its special issue for the June 2022 General Election[1]. Its articles are published digitally through the magazine's twitter account with the handle @NewStatesmanRX.
The magazine was awarded the UK Government's Media Spotlight award in May of 2022.[2]
Following TritoNotTrito's appointment as editor-in-chief, the New Statesman began publishing shorter form news tweets covering the latest headlines, as well as conducting public opinion surveys and statistical modelling[3].
The New Statesman largely ceased operations in November 2022 following TritoNotTrito's controversial ban from the United Kingdom and was subsequently deregistered two months later. The company was later re-registered and resumed operations in April 2023.
Ownership & Trademarks
The magazine was registered as a limited company by Companies House on 9 April 2022 with AlanHalvorsen owning 85% of its shares, and Guardian Media Group owning the remaining 15%. Following the absorption of Guardian Media Group into the BBC on 11 July 2022, its stake in the New Statesman was transferred to AlanHalvorsen. In September of 2022, AlanHalvorsen transferred 15% of his shares in the New Statesman to TritoNotTrito, upon the latter's appointment as editor-in-chief. The company was among 11 media outlets deregistered as part of a media purge in January of 2023, having largely ceased operations 2 months earlier.
New Statesman Limited was registered once more as a limited company on 6 April 2023, with AlanHalvorsen owning 100% of its shares.
The company currently owns the rights to the 'Commons Confidential' trademark, a news column focusing on current affairs in the House of Commons, as well as the 'Law Review' trademark, a news column providing 'valuable insight into Britain's legal system' from authors such as BarryRuarc KC. Prior to its deregistration in January 2023, the company owned the rights to the 'Press Gazette' trademark, which was never publicly used.
